P.P.S.: Also found the StarTech adapters suggested by bw9753, at only US$90 on -so I ordered those too.
BTW, I had already downloaded the User Manual from ATEN's website-so I knew what I was getting. OK, I started to put through an order to see if they would charge NYS-NYC sales tax (which I'm sure B&H Photo would) they don't, so I put through my order. P.S.: Oh, I see what he found was the ATEN CS782DP itself-at US$8 less than it is at B&H Photo. Besides, I would only have saved about US$20 over StarTech's VGA-to-DVI adapter, and would probably have had to worry about flashing it for a Mac. But that turned out to be a PCI card, not an AGP card. It turned out that the only available card that looked like a possibility is a Radeon 7000 from NewEgg.
However, using this as a guide, I went searching via Google for DVI-output video cards that would work with a Digital Audio G4 and have Mac OS 9 support. What you suggest certainly appealed to me because of simplicity. I'm guessing yours has an ADC port and VGA? I'd imagine an ADC to DVI adapter would be scarce and expensive these days. Would it not be simpler to just find an AGP video card for the G4 with a standard DVI output? DVI is easy to adapt to DP. With a bargain like that, how could I resist?Īs a bonus I'd get to use the 7-port USB2 hub I also inherited, to provide power for at least one of the adapters. So the total price for the ATEN CS782DP plus the two adapters would only be US$281 instead of US$300. Simpler keyword searches at other stores seem to bring up huge lists of the opposite direction adapter.Īt, the combined price for the two adapters is US$129, and of course there would be no currency conversion bite for me. You can probably find the same exact products from other retailers but it may take more work. They also have a useful adapter selector that lets you choose the type of input and output device exactly. I think I have a twenty-year-old Ethernet cable from them. I picked them because they've been around forever. In fact, it was Google Canada that sent me to the Canadian store while goes to the USA store by default. Not enough demand for DVI/DP KVM switches, I guess. Besides, the total weight of the Apple and Samsung monitors is more than the rated maximum weight capacity of the IKEA stand.īut the prices on quality 2-port DVI/DP KVM switches with 2560 x 1440 resolution simply haven't been coming down towards $100.
For another thing, I'd rather use the Samsung VGA monitor in another room connected to my inherited 2010 Mac Pro tower, which is now connected to a bulky 14-inch (that's what the ruler says) Sony Trinitron CRT monitor. The old KVM switch has its video input connected to an old 17-inch Samsung VGA LED monitor that is also sitting on the monitor stand-at the far left, while the Apple monitor's DisplayPort input is connected directly to the MacBook Pro's miniDisplayPort output.įor one thing, it's going to be a pain in the neck (literally) when I start seriously using the G4 tower-if I still can't connect it directly to the Apple monitor. Right now I have a keyboard and mouse connected to both computers via a 2001 IOGear KVM switch (it's left over from when my last employer lent me a Windows 95 desktop-form-factor "gray box" for working at home), and the G4 tower has its VGA output connected to that old KVM switch. But last summer I also dragged my ex-wife's old 2001 Mac Digital Audio G4 tower out of my closet, and I expect to be using it for a retirement project it's sitting on my desk next to the monitor stand. What happened is that last summer I inherited a 27-inch 2560 x 1440 Apple LED Cinema Display, which now sits on a wooden IKEA monitor stand (it's actually one of the last dot-matrix printer stands IKEA sold in the U.S.) over my early-2011 MacBook Pro.
But I want it for not much more than $100, and that doesn't seem to be happening. UltraMon is a trademark of Realtime Soft AG.What I want is this KVM switch's elderly brother/sister, that can do 2560 x 1440 on the video.
